  How Far Have We Come?

I'm on my school's quizbowl team. We play against other teams to see who can answer questions pertaining to English, history, science, math, and other academic subjects the fastest. It's pretty fun, and I actually like getting a bit competitive every once in a while. There's only one problem....... [view]

  BIKINI BRAIN

BIKINI BRAIN Do you have Bikini Brain? Did you know that Danica Patrick has a tattoo on her lower back? It has been perceived for years that men view women in bathing suits as sex objects, but now there seems to be actual data to back it up....... [view]

Merry War on Christmas -- The Religious Right Isn't Going Anywhere

By Frederick Clarkson , The Public Eye : The Christian right has launched a permanent religious war to thwart, and even to roll back, advances in civil rights. Editor's Note: The idea that Bush's departure and Barack Obama's election herald a decline in power for the Christian...... [view]

All Made Up: Makeup and Feminism

Ever since I moved past the princess/ballerina dress-up days of my youth, I have convinced myself that makeup is the root of all evil. I told myself that empowered women never wore makeup. That makeup was a tool used by the Mass Media to make women look like one type of beauty. The voice in my...... [view]

  I Hate Sarah Palin

It’s true. I know this may be confusing. For some reason, I’ve consistently been questioned by why I do not like her. She has a vulva, so we must have things in common, right? Actually, not much more than that 2nd X chromosome. Here are a few things that I know about Alaskan...... [view]

  Geek chic and post-partum feminism.

Geek chic. That's all the rage this year, and although it's become quite a fad, there are truebies who have upheld it and will continue to do so. So I'll write a letter to someone who I think is really cool: Dear Tina Fey, When you were on SNL, I didn't really pay much attention to you. But...... [view]

“grrrl” is a noun, not an adjective!

This is an essay I was asked to write for a WS class last semester. Throughout my entire life, my gender has played a huge role. It has determined what kind of things I should be interested in, what expectations are placed upon me and what point of view I have on certain issues. It has...... [view]

stacked Emergency Librarian, celebrating the history of a radical feminist Canadian periodical

In 1973, Sherrill Cheda, Phyllis Yaffe and Barbara Clubb thought it was odd that most librarians were women, but most people who ran libraries were men. They decided to publish something that would take women seriously. Women who were speaking truths that had never been aired. In Emergency...... [view]

  Raping America’s Female Soldiers

For the more than 200,000 women serving on active duty in the U.S. military, sexual assault and harassment are issues not to be ignored – and now that the armed forces are taking steps to correct the problem, some wonder if it is doing enough. In the fiscal year ‘07, ending Oct. 1,...... [view]

  Learning more about women’s history

Submitted By:   JoAnneT

Date Created:  2008-02-13
Description:   Women today owe a lot to our predecessors who have paved the way for us to vote, work, have our voices heard and be recognized as persons. It is important to acknowledge women’s history, to take note of the progress made so that we can continue to fight oppression and marginalization. Women in every country of the world should be able to have autonomy, bodily integrity, receive an education, have the right to vote and hold public office, own property and work for fair and equal pay. We must learn from our past, for the sake of society; as the saying goes “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
