CRITICAL REVIEW of the AUGUST 2010 WYCS

Description:   The WY Congress in Istanbul was considerably more complicated than the WY Conference in Leon. It was bigger and longer - 1,000 intl. youth delegates to Mexico’s 208; 40+ VIPs, 200+ Volunteers; 240 Workshops; 12 Round Tables; 15 Cultural Performances; 45 Local Action Projects spread out across a 14 day Congress. It was further complicated by the fact that the new Minister of Education – whose predecessor had signed the MoU to manage it – was never fully behind it. In fact, on 9th June – 10 days AFTER the deadline by which all International Delegates had confirmed their flights, visas etc. she cancelled it. Mercifully, the Minister of Youth picked up the ball – and, with enormous skill and courage, found the finance to support it. Also – many local authorities rallied round and supported the local action projects. Turkey’s reputation for hospitality and for pulling rabbits out of hats at the last minute was wonderfully affirmed!
